The collection comprises one published history of the Ambler family by Louis Ambler, as well as correspondence and research notes produced during the production of the volume.

The correspondence mainly consists of requests from Louis Ambler, author of 'The Ambler Family' to Thomas Ambler, asking the latter to research particular aspects of the history of the family in York.

The handwritten pencil notes were most likely produced by Thomas Ambler, Nunnery Lane, York, as part of his research on behalf of Louis Ambler.
