Administrative history

J Kendrew was a printer based in Colliergate, York, in the first quarter of the 19th century. He appears to have specialised in chapbooks, including penny books and larger format versions.

Content and structure area

Scope and content

Many of these chapbooks are undated, but all appear to be from the first quarter of the 19th century. They were printed and sold in York, and primarily aimed at children in the city. The chapbooks all contain lavish woodcuts as illustrations throughout, and many contain a full Roman printed alphabet and Italian printed alphabet at either the beginning or the end. These particular chapbooks are all very small in format. Please see individual item descriptions for information about each title, or CBK/2 for larger format chapbooks.
