Missing alt text

Some images on the site do not have associated alternative text. (WCAG 1.1.1)

Linked images do not have descriptive alt text

Images (from the database) do not have meaningful alternative text descriptions. Instead they have the filename (e.g. 14791_141.jpg). (WCAG 1.1.1 / 2.4.4)

Linked images missing alt text

Some images contained within anchor tags serving as links to other pages and external sites do not have associated alternative text. (WCAG 1.1.1 / 2.4.4)

Empty Links

In certain cases the site uses links with no text content to indicate the purpose of the link. (WCAG 2.4.4)

Non Descriptive Links

In certain cases the site uses links with text content that does not clearly indicate the purpose of the link. (WCAG 2.4.4)

Empty Buttons

Some of the buttons on the user interface are empty or have no value text. (WCAG 1.1.1, 2.4.4).

Descriptive titles are not always used for pages and frames

Third-party content

York Libraries & Archives Mutual Ltd. Archive Website uses AtoM, a third-party web publishing platform for archives developed by Artefactual Systems. It has been 'skinned' with our branding to look like our website. The accessibility issues detailed in the previous section relate to AtoM and are outside of our immediate control.

The images depicted in York Libraries & Archives Mutual Ltd. Website may be owned by a third-party. This may or may not be the creator of the items themselves, and they may be living or deceased. It is not possible to ask the original creator to assist with the creation of accessibility requirements such as providing a definitive alternative text.

We are currently working to fix these issues and expect to have completed all necessary fixes by the end of 2021.

How we tested this website

This website was last tested in the week beginning 19th April 2021 by Max Communications Ltd. All pages were tested using the 'Axe' Google Chrome accessibility compliance plugin.

When deciding on a sample of pages to test, we chose based on:

  • The site's most popular pages.
  • Pages that gave a good example of each one of our templates.
  • Pages which included images, multimedia content and interactive elements.
  • Pages which included web forms.
