The first 'official' appearance of the Cundall family in Acaster Malbis is in the 1798 Land Tax records. The family were significantly involved in life in the village. Both Robert and Horatio Cundall donated money to build a new chapel. When a school for poor boys was set up in Acaster Malbis in the early part of the nineteenth century, both a William Cundall and a John Kettlewell subscribed to raise money for the school. Horatio Cundall was a Churchwarden at Holy Trinity Church and lived at Hall Garth. He worked as a solicitor in York.
The Cundalls also owned land at Mount Pleasant until at least 1937. William Cundall farmed the land in 1898. Missionary meetings were held in a barn on the land. They also held land at The Poplars and Robert Henry farmed there in 1898.
The Cundall family had ties with another long-established family in Acaster Malbis - the Kettlewells. Several marriages seem to have taken place between the two families:
Robert Cundall and Mary Kettlewell, 1783
William Cundall and Frances Kettlewell, 1801
John W. Cundall and Mary Kettlewell, 1937.
