Letter received by Reverend J Fowler
FOW/1 · Pièce · 17 April 1925
Fait partie de Reverend J Fowler papers

Handwritten letter to Rev. J. Fowler, Arundel, from Professor P. F. Kendall (Chairman of the Quaternary Peat Committee of the British Association for the Advancement of Science), Moor Allerton, Leeds (written on B.A.A.S. Quaternary Peat Committee letterheaded notepaper). Kendall is sending two specimens of Haigh Moor coal (from Whitwood Colliery) from his coal cellar, which should together prove the 'growth in place' origin of that coal seam. Kendall also refers to Rev. Fowler's uncle William Fowler, 'a most kindly and gracious personality and a botanist of eminence'.

Fait partie de Reverend J Fowler papers

Typewritten letter to Rev. J. Fowler from W. H. Young, Derby. Young commiserates Fowler on his and his family's illness, and admires his courage; he notes that Fowler has bought Kendall's book, and discusses it; since he has moved to Derbyshire, Young has 'gone man [sic] on Brachiopods'; he hopes to 'go with Kendall and the Yorlshire [sic] Geologists up Teesdale at Whitsun'; he comments on how busy he is nowadays; he has bought a big house, and talks about his family; he has to give two lectures at Oxford in July.

Letter received by Reverend J Fowler
FOW/3 · Pièce · 19 May 1927
Fait partie de Reverend J Fowler papers

Handwritten letter to Rev. J. Fowler from Professor P. F. Kendall, West Wimbledon, London SW20. Fowler has invited Kendall to visit him; however, Kendall's 'time is rather fully hypothecated for this Summer' - he will be 'going up North for a fortnight at Eclipse time and again for the Brit. Assoc. meeting and after', and will probably have to deal with 'work on Water Supply and similar matters'. Refers to ironstones from South Downs, ironstone at Piltdown, and 'Lenham relics' along North Downs. Comments that 'I thought when I came South that I was leaving all the really interesting country behind, just as I did when I went North 42 years ago, but, if one have the real appetite, any Geological food seems nourishing.' Asks Fowler to 'give my kind regards to Standing'.
