Bundle of newspaper cuttings compiled by J W Knowles, mostly relating to theatrical production in York.

The volume contains a number of newspaper cuttings relating to activities Christopher Milward was involved in during his tenure as Lord Mayor (1895-1897). The cuttings have been pasted into an earlier letterbook from the 1830s.

Christopher Milward was a member of the Knowles' extended family, and held the position of Lord Mayor of York twice (1895-1897) including Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Year. This collection includes an album of newspaper cuttings relating to his work as Lord Mayor, and an order of service for his funeral.

Exercise book containing additional handwritten notes and newspaper cuttings about Lord Mayors of York not found in KNO/6/2 and KNO/6/3. The volume was originally entitled 'F J Smart: English and French' and the reverse of the book contains what appears to be school French homework.

The card consists of a hand-coloured front designed by J W Knowles, and a rotating disk at the back featuring photographs of the entire family. The rear disk could be rotated depending on which family member's birthday it was.

The bundle includes newspaper cuttings and other notes collected by John Ward Knowles and relating to events in the city of Leeds, including obituaries. Also includes two souvenir programmes for the City of Leeds Tercentenary Celebrations, July 1926, and article from Woman's Home magazine entitled 'The Romance of Old China', one programme for the Leeds Musical Festival Album and one exercise book of newspaper cuttings entitled 'Scripture'.

These negatives and postcards were originally individually labelled by J W Knowles, and stored in poor quality envelopes. During the process of cataloguing, these items were repackaged into archival quality envelopes, and the details on the original envelopes transferred to the catalogue descriptions. Some are identified and include Fountains Abbey, cathedrals in France, Switzerland and Belgium, photographs of York streets and buildings, details from York Minster fabric rolls relating to glass and glaziers, York Minster windows, Great Malvern, St Martin's Church Leicester, All Saint's North Street York, Gloucester Catherdral and others. Many of the images appear elsewhere in the glass plate negative and photographic print collection, however these copies also contain explanatory notes. A large percentage of these images do not contain captions, however they are likely to be of stained glass in York Minster and other churches.
