Photographs, slides and additional information relating to libraries in York - primarily City of York Council run libraries, but also including a small amount of information on York Minster Library, National Railway Museum Library and Archives and Naburn Hospital Library. The additional information includes details of opening hours, addresses and building styles.

Created by the Library History Group of the Library Association in response to a number of historic library buildings being demolished or repurposed in the 1990s. Whilst the initiative was originally supposed to be national in scope, funding for the project could not be secured, and the images and information collected were used in other displays and publications instead.

Most of the images are unidentified. Images are in colour, and do include St John's car park with Waverley Street on the left and Garden Street on the right, and the Bull Lane flats.

The photographs were originally taken by someone from Sheffield who worked on pub refurbishments, They were then donated to Sheffield City Council, who transferred them to York City Council reference library (date of transfer unknown).

Includes one showing the interior of a York Corporation tram, and the second image showing the exterior of a tram with a female tram driver. The tram in the second picture is running line to High Ousegate. Both images are held in the same mount.

Subjects include York Museum Gardens, the River Ouse frozen in 1963, street scenes (Lendal, Rowntree factory, Tanners Moat, Wellington Row, Blossom Street, Bootham, Micklegate, Piccadilly, Goodramgate), the marriage of Katherine Worsley to the Duke of Kent at York Minster (1961) and stage sets for the York Mystery Plays, c.1962.

Cromwell House on the right, was occupied by the Bedern Mission. The house was probably built around 1700, but incorporated the timber framing from an earlier building. The house has an unusual design featuring a prominent pedimental gable.

Includes photographs of damage to buildings in 1915 in Nunthorpe Road, Caroline Street, Price Street, Kyme Street and Bishophill. Also includes a photograph of soldiers on Knavesmire Road going to war, 1914.
