This collection currently consists of two volumes of papers - one containing newspaper cuttings and handwritten notes (all about poetry) and the other containing miscellaneous documents, maps and correspondence relating to Yorkshire.

The volumes include names of employees, dates of birth, insurance numbers (where applicable) as well as details of positions worked and grades. Also includes details of salaries and bonuses achieved. The volumes are predominantly from the 20th century, but in some cases relate to employees born in the 19th century.

Benton was born and raised in York and worked on the railways. He signed up to fight during the First World War, and returned home injured in 1918 following the loss of his lower left arm and a bone in his right arm. The papers in this collection relate primarily to his war service. Please note digital copies of all items in this collection also exist.

Includes one photograph of Robert Benton with his wife and eldest son (father of the depositor), one photograph of Robert Benton with officers from his regiment, two photographs of him recovering from injuries sustained in 1918 and one photograph taken after the First World War. Digital copies of all these items also exist.

Letter from the chaplain of the 1/5th Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment to Robert Benton's wife. The letter is dated the day after Robert Benton was wounded by a shell.

Partial letter to Mrs Benton regarding the injuries sustained by her husband. The author is unknown, but appears to be a friend of Robert's in the same regiment.

Written from the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station in response to letters from Mrs Benton and Mr Benton senior, the letter includes details of Robert Benton's movements following his injury.
