Colour and black and white postcards showing stained glass windows in various cathedrals in the United Kingdom and Europe. Also contains a series of postcards hand annotated by J W Knowles relating to stained glass techniques (these appear to be photographic prints pasted onto blank postcards).

The images are not identified however the numbers on the reverse of some images appear to be panel numbers. It is possible that these images relate to one of the windows in York Minster.

These items were found packaged with the remaining items in the Knowles archive, however their exact provenance cannot be ascertained.

The bundle comprises colour artwork for stained glass windows, war memorials and church fittings carried out by J W Knowles & Sons. Most of the images are mounted onto card.

Includes loose handwritten notes compiled by J W Knowles about composers whose works have been performed in York Minster. Also includes an index to another (as yet unidentified) volume.

The plates are very small and fragile, and each is individually wrapped in paper.

The blocks vary in the details that they show, and may be from a number of different windows.

The house, 'Beach-holme', was the family holiday home of J W Knowles and his family for a number of years.

Volumes of handwritten notes regarding the stained glass windows in York Minster. The first volume is prefaced by the following: 'The following notes formed the first draft for a work on the Stained Glass of the Minster by the late J W Knowles. They were collected, arranged and presented to the Library by his Executors. An amended copy including all his original sketches and drawings for illustration is in the Victoria & Albert Museum Library.

'Ally Sloper's Half Holiday'. Bank Holiday edition of the Comic newspaper, 1st April 1899.

Miscellaneous handwritten short notes on a variety of subjects.

Includes twelve prints from woodcut drawings mounted onto card. The prints depict various scenes, including harvest time, wine making, bread making etc and show the figures in medieval dress.

The glass negative was used as an illustration in J W Knowles' 'A manual of glass painting.'

The book was published in 1801. Three slides show images from the book, the other two show text.

One image depicts Science and Literature in the Middle Ages and is taken from Lacroix, whilst the other is of a window with roundels from the same publication.

The images were taken from the Clerestory, Cologne.

The images were used as illustrations in 'The Universal Magazine' and 'Glass Blowing magazine.'

The images are labelled 'not intended to be worshipped, from Dr Fowler's mural paintings in All Saints Wakefield.'
