The house, 'Beach-holme', was the family holiday home of J W Knowles and his family for a number of years.
Includes:
Visitors book to the house featuring photographs of the building and notes from visitors who came to stay. Included amongst the signatures are the parents of English artist and sculptor Barbara Hepworth;
Letter re income tax on the property, 1910;
Newspaper cuttings book re Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby (including details of author Leo Walmsley who used to stay in the area and played cricket with J W Knowles); 1905-1964.

Christopher Milward was a member of the Knowles' extended family, and held the position of Lord Mayor of York twice (1895-1897) including Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Year. This collection includes an album of newspaper cuttings relating to his work as Lord Mayor, and an order of service for his funeral.

Entitled 'Diagram to show the continuity of design and practice in the York School of Glass Painting, 1399 to 1529', the diagram is in a family tree format, giving names and the dates they were actively working. The diagram was compiled from information in the wills of glass painters, the Freemans rolls and the Fabric rolls of York Minster. Rolled and wrapped in its original packaging.

Volumes of handwritten notes regarding the stained glass windows in York Minster. The first volume is prefaced by the following: 'The following notes formed the first draft for a work on the Stained Glass of the Minster by the late J W Knowles. They were collected, arranged and presented to the Library by his Executors. An amended copy including all his original sketches and drawings for illustration is in the Victoria & Albert Museum Library.
