Biographical history

Robert Morrell was born in Sowerby, nr Thirsk, in 1799. In 1829, he married Anna Wilson in Masham. They had three children - Robert (b. 1830), Jemima (b. 1832) and William Wilberforce (b. 1838).
In 1869, William Wilberforce Morrell married Lydia Hutchinson. They had two sons - Cuthbert (b. 1872) and John Bowes (b. 1873).

Scope and content

At present this collection only comprises boxes of wooden printing blocks with copper plates (and in some cases steel plates), used in the production of J B Morrell's publications. The plates are primarily uncatalogued, and relate to a number of different works. The blocks also come in a variety of different sizes, depending on the size of the original illustration.
