    Legal status

    Functions, occupations and activities

Magistrates continue to play an administrative and judicial role. Magistrates are volunteer amateur judges and officials, answerable to the Lord Chancellor who administer the lowest court in England (formally the petty sessions). They are unpaid except for expenses and allowances. The role of the magistrates is set down by central government and has included functions such as assisting paupers, visiting asylyms, processing vehicle offences, licensing alcohol, ordering evictions, family law, sentencing petty offenders and referring more serious offences to higher courts. Quarter sessions were replaced by Crown courts in 1972.
