    Functions, occupations and activities

In 1861, Robert Dent was an apprentice carpenter, working under Master Carpenter Thomas Wilson. After completing his apprenticeship, Dent worked as a joiner, carpenter, and builder, becoming a Master Carpenter by 1881.
He set up his own joinery business at 3 Downhill Street in 1872. By 1881, he had two businesses in York - one was as a joiner and undertaker, located in Malt Shovel Yard, Walmgate, and the other was at 22 Charlton Street, as a joiner and builder. In 1896, he relocated his business to Lord Mayor's Walk, and operated all three of his trades (Joiner, Builder, and Undertaker) from this premises.
An advert in the York Directory of 1896 promoted the variety of services Dent's business offered - 'Estimates given for all kinds of Building Work. Repairs promptly attended to. Funerals furnished on reasonable terms.'
In 1891, Robert's son Charles was apprenticed to him as a joiner, and by 1901 William had also entered the firm. At some point between 1901 and 1905, the firm became Robert Dent & Sons, Joiners and Builders, and it kept the name even after William's death, at age 38, in 1905.
After William's death, Charles Dent continued to work in the business with his father. After Robert Dent's death in 1931 the firm kept the name 'R. Dent & Sons'. In 1930, the business had relocated to Bowling Green Lane. It remained there until 1969, when it relocated to Redeness Street in Layerthorpe. The company is listed at the Redeness Street in the last published York Directory from 1975.
Charles Dent had one son, Lewis Edward, born c1904, but it is not known if Charles also entered the family business.
