Administrative history

The York Castle prison (originally consisting of Clifford's tower) was the original county prison in york, outside of civic control. City felons were sent there from 1848. By the nineteenth century the prison buildings included the debtor's prison, male and female prisons. Many prisoners were kept at the prison awaiting trial at York assizes.

Scope and content

Day to day accounts of gaoler's activities at York Castle prison including attendance at quarter sessions, births in the prison, suicide attempts, disciplinary issues and punishments, arrivals and departures of prisoners including executions. From 1838 city felons were sent to the Castle prison, rather than the city prison.
