Administrative history

The 1903 Motor Car Act introducted mandatory registration for both vehicles and drivers, administered by the local council who were to issue and keep a record of the numbers. The number had to be displayed on the vehicle. In 1969 the function transferred to central government, using the same local offices.

Content and structure area

Scope and content

Records of vehicle licensing and registration, including motor cars and motorcycles, and heavy vehicles. Some registers combine cars and motorcycles, whilst others contain just one or the other, so more than one volume may need to be consulted to cover the same licence plate or year range. Registers occasionally include cancellation and transfer dates, plus occasional inserted correspondence.

We are able to provide certified copies of entries for a fee, please see our website or contact us for futher details.

Four of the 28 volumes are restricted under the Data Protection Act (Y/PPT/3/1/9, Y/PPT/3/1/21 to 23 covering the period 1948-1959) Researchers may consult these volumes after filling in a Data Protection Researcher Exemption form. This form may take up to 48 hours to be authorised so please contact us in advance if you wish to see these volumes.
