York Art Society was 'devoted to the promotion of fine art within Yorkshire and beyond'. It had the following purposes:
    a) To encourage the practice of Art in York and neighbourhood
    b) To hold private exhibitions of Members' and Associates' work from time to time for the purposes of criticism.
    c) To promote, if practicable, occasional Public Exhibitions of loaned and Members' work
    d) To bring together from time to time, for lectures and other purposes, those in the neighbourhood who are interested in Art
    e) To build up by degrees a collection of carefully-drawn records of artistic interest in and around York.

By 1939, the Society held three exhibitions of Members' works in February, May, and October each year. Membership to the Society was by subscription, with a fee of 10s per year. By 1949, the exhibitions of Members' works were held twice yearly, and the subscription fee was 15s per year.
Presently, the Society meets once a month and continues to hold twice yearly exhibitions in April and October.
