The Committee was set up in 1914 by the Lord Mayor as part of a national scheme to support local people during the First World War. The Committee continued to provide support locally until 1935.

Papers relating to the operational activities of the Committee including reparations to victims of the Zeppelin Raids in York and relief for families of men in the forces. Also includes papers on the sub-committees and other funds such as the National Food Fund and establishment of other social services.
