History
At different times the term City Engineer or Surveyor appear to have referred to broadly the same functions. In 1850 the joint post of City Engineer and Surveyor was formally instituted. Other titles such as Planning Officer were incorporated into the post at various times.

Functions, occupations and activities
Surveyed, planned, designed, implemented, assessed and maintained all corporation engineering works in the city including public and civic buildings, structures such as walls and bridges, roads and housing. Managed large and diverse department, supported by a Deputy City Engineer. In the twentieth century, the department was split into the technical section, clerical section and works department. The works department carried out highways, structures, seweage, cleansing and refuse collection and plant and vehicle maintainance. At times this post also responsible for civic assets such as plate and regalia, and as a general steward for civic property.
