    Historique

    The ancient corporation of York, with rights and privileges gradually accrued over time by royal degree and legislation. It was dramatically reformed in 1835 following the Municipal Corporations Act.
    Previously known as "the Mayor and Commonality of the City of York", it developed into the historical corporation. The corporation was reformed in 1835, became a district council within North Yorkshire County Council in 1974 and a unitary authority once more as the City of York Council in 1996.

    York was first granted the right to have a mayor and pay it's own fee farm by the Charter of 1212.

    Functions, occupations and activities

    Functions varied over time, with responsibility for matters such as poor relief, lighting, public health, order and justice moving into and out of the Corporation. It paid taxes to central government and the crown, kept public order and owned property.

    The corporation or Lord Mayor also acted as trustees for various charities: kept the accounts of the charities and distributed funds accordingly to needy recipients. In 1835 the Commission on Municipal Corporations listed 38 corporation charities with a combined annual income of £511 and loan funds of £930.
