York was first granted the right to have a mayor and pay it's own fee farm by the Charter of 1212.
Functions, occupations and activities
Functions varied over time, with responsibility for matters such as poor relief, lighting, public health, order and justice moving into and out of the Corporation. It paid taxes to central government and the crown, kept public order and owned property.
The corporation or Lord Mayor also acted as trustees for various charities: kept the accounts of the charities and distributed funds accordingly to needy recipients.
