Labelled 'Staircase Hardwicke Grange by ER Tate'. This is a detailed illustration of the staircase with a plan in the top right corner. The illustration's title is 'The Grand Staircase, Hardwicke Grange, near Shrewsbury'. It also names the illustrator as 'E. Risdale Tate, Wandsworth, London, SW' and the recipient as 'F. Bibby Esqre'. Bibby is thought to be Frank Bibby (b. 1857) who owned the property. Edwin Risdale Tate (1862-1922) was born and educated in York, and he was an architect, artist, antiquarian, archaeologist, illuminator, photographer, and graphic designer. Glass plate negative.

At the bottom of the drawing, a man with a judge's wig and a snake's body has the word 'Chancery' inscribed on his tail. This sketch was adverised in The Morning Post on 4 August 1849 as follows: 'The Wreck of the Royal George drawn by Scrib. A moral showing how a royal vessel was sunk by a meek wind, during the butterfly season, to the delight of the great sea serpent and other amphibious monsters. - Published by the Hudson's Bay Company, 5, Haymarket.
