The volume contains handwritten notes on a variety of different subjects, including window restoration, porcelain and painting.

These numbered volumes contain newspaper clippings and handwritten notes, and are arranged by theme. Titles include actors, glass painting, oil and china painting, cloud waves and glossary.

The card consists of a hand-coloured front designed by J W Knowles, and a rotating disk at the back featuring photographs of the entire family. The rear disk could be rotated depending on which family member's birthday it was.

John Phillips was a geologist who also served as the Yorkshire Philosophical Society's museum keeper and draughtsman. He was famously chased by a bear around the YPS Gardens in 1831. Lantern slide.
