Volumes of handwritten notes regarding the stained glass windows in York Minster. The first volume is prefaced by the following: 'The following notes formed the first draft for a work on the Stained Glass of the Minster by the late J W Knowles. They were collected, arranged and presented to the Library by his Executors. An amended copy including all his original sketches and drawings for illustration is in the Victoria & Albert Museum Library.

Includes original black and white and colour designs for stained glass windows, war memorials and church fittings carried out by J W Knowles & Son, as well as photographs of glass panels. Many of the designs have been mounted onto card and are captioned.

Three colour designs by John Patterson, Art Master and headmaster of the York School of Design, retained by John Ward Knowles, who was involved with the school.

Entitled 'Diagram to show the continuity of design and practice in the York School of Glass Painting, 1399 to 1529', the diagram is in a family tree format, giving names and the dates they were actively working. The diagram was compiled from information in the wills of glass painters, the Freemans rolls and the Fabric rolls of York Minster. Rolled and wrapped in its original packaging.

The album relates to renovations on the premises carried out in the 1990s.

The exhibition took place in Leeds Grand Central Hall, and featured accompanying music from the Halle Orchestra.

The estate belonged to members of the extended Knowles family.

These items were not created by Knowles family themselves, but relate to the family home and business premises in Stonegate, York. They were created by a local researcher in the 1990s, and gifted to the family shortly afterwards.

The funeral of Christopher Milward took place in York Minster.

The volume contains a number of newspaper cuttings relating to activities Christopher Milward was involved in during his tenure as Lord Mayor (1895-1897). The cuttings have been pasted into an earlier letterbook from the 1830s.

The command was issued by King George III and relates to a ship captained by Scoresby called The Resolution, which was to sail to and attack Denmark during the Napoleonic Wars.

The items in this series were created by members of the extended Knowles family, however they can no longer be attributed to one family member in particular.

It is likely that the booklet was issued to John Alder Knowles in his capacity as a member of the Society.

Christopher Milward was a member of the Knowles' extended family, and held the position of Lord Mayor of York twice (1895-1897) including Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Year. This collection includes an album of newspaper cuttings relating to his work as Lord Mayor, and an order of service for his funeral.

The creed was apparently written by John Steward of Whitby and relates to William Pitt, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Henry Dundas.

This collection includes the baptism certificate of John Alder Knowles, papers regarding his enlistment and rationing in both the First and Second World Wars, and papers relating to his honorary degree from University of Hull in 1957.

The certificate was issued in St Michael le Belfrey, York.

John Alder Knowles enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Land Forces. Also includes a menu card for a dinner of the Cadets of No 5 Officer Cadet Battalion held on 30/3/1917.

Bundle of tickets and programme for Miss J E Knowles to attend the ceremony;
Four newspaper cuttings relating to the awards ceremony.

The card was issued by the 1st Field Survey Company and features a poem relating to the Royal Engineers in France.

The programmes were collected by John Ward Knowles, who was a member of the Society. Also includes some newspaper cuttings.

The house was previously owned by the Varvill family, ancestors of J W Knowles.

The house, 'Beach-holme', was the family holiday home of J W Knowles and his family for a number of years.
Includes:
Visitors book to the house featuring photographs of the building and notes from visitors who came to stay. Included amongst the signatures are the parents of English artist and sculptor Barbara Hepworth;
Letter re income tax on the property, 1910;
Newspaper cuttings book re Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby (including details of author Leo Walmsley who used to stay in the area and played cricket with J W Knowles); 1905-1964.

Also includes details of the Stanhope Forbes School of Painting.

The banns were read at St Michael le Belfrey, York.

The card consists of a hand-coloured front designed by J W Knowles, and a rotating disk at the back featuring photographs of the entire family. The rear disk could be rotated depending on which family member's birthday it was.

Includes two sketchbooks containing pencil drawings of J W Knowles, apparently as family holidays, as well as one volume of coloured and pencil sketches for window commissions.
