Bundle of loose handwritten notes and newspaper cuttings relating to the history of Stonegate.

Includes:
Handwritten notes regarding York Hospitals, two famous York mariners, local illustrations of English history, notes on miracle plays and York Railway station, c.1950;
Volume relating to the Mount Girls School, 1858
Business cards for Cave and Sons, engravers, and John Beckett, pharmacist;
Declaration, rules and regulations of the St James's Westminster Loyal Volunteers, 1803;
Handwritten note regarding John Dechett, coach driver, 19th century;
Two unidentified document seals, 19th century.
These items were found packaged with the remaining items in the Knowles archive, however their exact provenance cannot be ascertained.

The bundle comprises colour artwork for stained glass windows, war memorials and church fittings carried out by J W Knowles & Sons. Most of the images are mounted onto card.

Includes loose handwritten notes compiled by J W Knowles about composers whose works have been performed in York Minster. Also includes an index to another (as yet unidentified) volume.

Volumes of handwritten notes regarding the stained glass windows in York Minster. The first volume is prefaced by the following: 'The following notes formed the first draft for a work on the Stained Glass of the Minster by the late J W Knowles. They were collected, arranged and presented to the Library by his Executors. An amended copy including all his original sketches and drawings for illustration is in the Victoria & Albert Museum Library.

One image depicts Science and Literature in the Middle Ages and is taken from Lacroix, whilst the other is of a window with roundels from the same publication.

The images were taken from the Clerestory, Cologne.

The images were used as illustrations in 'The Universal Magazine' and 'Glass Blowing magazine.'

The images are labelled 'not intended to be worshipped, from Dr Fowler's mural paintings in All Saints Wakefield.'
