Although the firm of J.W. Ruddock's tailors was established c1881, members of the Ruddock family were tailors in York from at least 1851.
John Ruddock was born in c1823 and had four sons: George (b. c1844), John William (1) (b. c1852), Tom (b. c1855) and James (b. c1859).
John William Ruddock also had four sons - George Ruddock (b. c1882), John W. Ruddock (2) (b. c1883), Harold W. Ruddock (b. c1887), and Henry Ernest Ruddock (b. c1893).

John Ruddock had a tailors' shop in Eshelby Court, off Railway Street (now George Hudson Street) in York from 1851 to c1881.

His son, John William, was born in 1852. He became a tailor like his father. By 1881, he had his own tailors and drapers business on Jackson Street. In 1886, his shop became a tailors and hatters, and moved to 43 Micklegate, where it remained until 1909. In that year, the business expanded, becoming a tailors and breechesmaker and occupying No 42 Micklegate as well.
In 1913, the business became J.W. Ruddock & Sons, George and John William (2) having joined their father, and moved to 101 Micklegate. It remained there until 1967, which is the last time the firm is listed in the city trade directories.

Several other members of the Ruddock family also became tailors, and set up businesses in York. John William's brothers, George, James, and Tom Ruddock were all apprentice tailors as young men.
By 1872, George Ruddock had set up his own tailors' shop on St Martin's Lane, off Micklegate. He remained there until c1909, when he relocated to 25 Millfield Lane.
In 1886, Tom Ruddock was working as a tailor from a shop at 38 Fishergate.
James Ruddock took over his father's business in Eshelby Court in 1881. In 1886, he moved to 37 Nunthorpe Street. The business remained there until 1909, when it moved to 3 Markham Crescent.
