History
Poppleton History Society was started in February 1989. In 1998, the Society agreed to establish an archaeology section as a five year pilot project for York Archaeological Forum (YAF). Over the following years, the very successful Greater York Community Archaeology project was developed by YAF, with HLF funding for the initial position of Community Archaeologist. A highlight for the Poppleton Archaeology Group was the visit of Channel 4`s Time Team to Nether Poppleton in 2004.

Functions, occupations and activities
During the first few years members concentrated on writing booklets about specific aspects of the two Poppletons and doing an Oral History - recording approximately fifty current or previous residents. Old photographs and tapes were collected. These were later used by an enthusiastic group of IT literate members to create a CD rom - the Poppleton Community Archive, a Multimedia Millennium Project. This was later enhanced in a second CD rom.
Since its start, monthly talks have been a feature of the Society and in recent years an innovative very successful venture was introduced by Prue Bebb and Julian Crabb: a biennial banquet celebrating a national historical event, occasionally with York associations. Authentic food and entertainment of the period is enjoyed by 70 - 80 people, many dressed in appropriate costume.
Currently, having agreed to be a pilot which should prove useful for other local societies facing the challenge of how to deal with the accumulation of various papers, records, and photographs, the Society is creating an archive in Poppleton library under the guidance of Explore York.
