Sydney John Holmes was born and raised in Acomb near York. He fought in the First World War, incuding in Ypres in 1917-1918.

Includes 23 letters of Sydney John Holmes, as well as eight postcards and two photographs. The entirety was sent to his mother, father and sister between 1917 and 1918 from Ypres, whilst he was serving in the First World War. Also includes a copy of a published book by J E Mackfall, transcribing the letters.
