      Functions, occupations and activities

A John Sumpner born c. 1783 became a freeman of York in 1822. Somewhat unusually, he achieved this by paying for the right to become a freeman, receiving it 'per ord' rather than via the more traditional route of inheritance from the paternal line or apprenticeship. He went on to become a Master Plumber and Glazier, employing apprentices himself. He had a plumbing and glazing business at 10 Low Ousegate from c1843-c1851. In 1851, his residence was given as 6 Park Street.

Martha Sumpner, nee Willingham, was married to Thomas Sumpner. It is likely that Thomas, born in 1791, was brother to the John Sumpner who was born in 1783.
