The Swales family were butchers in York from c1828 - c1913. John Swales (1) first had a butcher's shop in 1828 at 10 Bridge Street.
By 1838, the business had moved to 21 Goodramgate. The Swales butcher business remained in this location until c1913. From 1838 - 1861 the number of the shop changed, from 21 to 20 to 19 Goodramgate, perhaps in accordance with changes to street numbering. From 1861, the shop kept the number 19 Goodramgate.
In 1861, John Swales (2) had a second shop at 15 Lord Mayor's Walk, though by 1872 this second shop had closed, and the main shop at Goodramgate continued as the family's sole business premises. . John Swales (2) presumably took over the business upon the death of his father (probably around 1859) and was the proprietor of the business until his death in 1886.
After his death, his wife Mary ran the business, assisted by their son, John Thomas, from 1887 - 1897.
In 1897, John Thomas took over the business and ran it until about 1913, which is the last year that it is listed in the city directories.
In addition to working in and later running the family business, John Thomas Swales was a Methodist lay preacher and an influential member of several local trade organizations.
His brother, James Ernest Swales was a draper in 1911.
