In 1996 York became a unitary authority once more as the City of York Council.
Previously known as "the Mayor and Commonality of the City of York", it developed into the historical Corporation (see City of York Corporation (Unreformed). The corporation was reformed in 1835, became a district council with North Yorkshire County Council in 1974 and a unitary authority once more as the City of York Council in 1996.

Restricted Access: Access to the full current electoral register: researchers are able to consult the current register by appointment only in the Archives Reading Room. Access should be for electoral purposes and researchers will be asked to sign a form in which they agree to abide by this provision. It's a criminal offence for this register to be used for purposes other than those specified in The Representation of the People Regulations, 2001. Anyone inspecting the full register may only make handwritten notes (no laptops). It is not permitted to photograph or copy the register in any way.
