History
York Centre for Voluntary Service (known as York CVS) was incorporated on 30 March 1951 as York Council for Voluntary Service. It was then known as York Community Council Ltd (1983-1985) and York Council for Voluntary Services (2010-2013) before being renamed to its present configuration in 2013. It is a social action organisation; supporting and championing York's voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector to make positive change, challenge issues and grow new ideas for the future in order to strengthen communities.

Legal status
York CVS is a Company Limited by Guarantee, Registered in England (no. 493550) which reports annually to Companies House. The Company Secretary role is currently undertaken by the Chief Executive. York CVS is also a Registered Charity (no. 225087) which must report annually to the Charity Commission.\n\nYork CVS is governed by an unpaid Board of Charity Trustees, who are also Company Directors. They are drawn from membership or co-opted for their specific skills or experience. The Board of Trustees governs the organisation in accordance with the governing document, the York CVS Articles of Association.
Functions, occupations and activities
The organisation supporting new and existing VCSE groups and organisations with guidance about legal structures, governance issues, policies and procedures and by identifying potential funding sources and developing funding bids; brings organisations together to discuss and challenge local issues through our events and voluntary sector forums; represents the voluntary sector at strategic board level; and champions the sector by promoting what they do best – making a difference for individuals and their communities.
