      The Committee was set up in 1914 by the Lord Mayor as part of a national scheme to support local people during the First World War. The Committee continued to provide support locally until 1935.

      The Committee provided relief to the families of men in the forces, supported in the care of War refugees and managed paperwork regarding reparations to war damage particularly following the 1916 Zeppelin Raids. It also supported a number of other funds and after the First World War set up a Childrens' Holiday Camp and organised local events such as Flag Day.
