Hotel offered for sale following a case in Chancery [Wilkinson versus Wilkinson]. The Guardians purchased the hotel for the purpose of erecting new poor law offices.

Comprises correspondence; papers relating to sale and purchase; and historic title deeds s for Etridge's Royal Hotel.

Includes admission and discharge books for the inmates of the York Workhouse (later called the City Institution and The Grange); admission and discharge books for the casual (wandering) poor; and porters' admission and discharge books.

This series of conveyances includes a number issued by the Corporation of York and others issued by third parties, relating to land and premises in the City of York area. Also includes property files such as commercial conveyances, purchases/acquisitions, title enquiries, commercial/business leases, deeds and title documents for various lands owned by City of York Council.

Summary accounts of monies received by the relieving officer and amounts of relief charged to each parishes/ward.

Note, these records contain very few names of individuals. Individuals are only recorded where their particular case has incurred extra costs.

Comprises relief and expenditure books for the York Poor Law Union, York Out-Relief Union, Bishopthorpe Out-Relief Union, Escrick Out-Relief Union and Flaxton Out-Relief Union.

First World War project

Includes letters of support, project evaluation and financial statement, press cuttings, workshop entitled 'responses to First World War conscription,' exhibition publicity and programme November 2017, transcript of correspondence and copies of three publications.

The volumes contain newspaper clippings and handwritten notes on Yorkshire churches, church architecture and York Minster, whilst the additional papers include typescripts of articles written by J A Knowles and information on specific windows in York Minster and elsewhere.

The volumes primarily include handwritten notes by J W Knowles, and newspaper cuttings on theatrical productions, theatres, actors and actresses. The series also includes theatrical programmes for a number of theatres, including York Theatre Royal and the Grand Opera House, and theatrical magazines.

These negatives and postcards were originally individually labelled by J W Knowles, and stored in poor quality envelopes. During the process of cataloguing, these items were repackaged into archival quality envelopes, and the details on the original envelopes transferred to the catalogue descriptions. This information now appears in the 'Title' field. Please see individual item descriptions for full details of this extensive series.

Information recorded for each rateable property may include: name of occupier; name of owner; description of property (e.g. house, garden, public house); name and situation of property; rateable value of property; amount of rate; amount of rate collected.

Note that earlier rate books may not include a street address for the property.

Collection and deposit books were records of accounts kept by the Collector of Poor Rates. They record all sums received, deposited and paid by the Collector. Also includes one volume of Collector's monthly statements.

Note, these records do not contain details of individuals or properties.
