Glass plates negatives and postcards

These negatives and postcards were originally individually labelled by J W Knowles, and stored in poor quality envelopes. During the process of cataloguing, these items were repackaged into archival quality envelopes, and the details on the original envelopes transferred to the catalogue descriptions. This information now appears in the 'Title' field. Please see individual item descriptions for full details of this extensive series.

Please note, reference numbers KNO/24/2011 to KNO/24/2199 were not used.

The images are not identified however the numbers on the reverse of some images appear to be panel numbers. It is possible that these images relate to one or more of the windows in York Minster or from churches elsewhere in York, and certainly includes at least one image from the St William window.

Most of the images are photographic prints created by J W Knowles and Sons and pasted ont blank postcards. Some are identified and include Fountains Abbey, cathedrals in France, Switzerland and Belgium, photographs of York streets and buildings, details from York Minster fabric rolls relating to glass and glaziers, York Minster windows, Great Malvern, St Martin's Church Leicester, All Saint's North Street York, Gloucester Catherdral and others. Many of the images appear elsewhere in the glass plate negative and photographic print collection, however these copies also contain explanatory notes. A large percentage of these images do not contain captions, however they are likely to be of stained glass in York Minster and other churches.

The volumes contain newspaper clippings and handwritten notes on Yorkshire churches, church architecture and York Minster, whilst the additional papers include typescripts of articles written by J A Knowles and information on specific windows in York Minster and elsewhere.

The house, 'Beach-holme', was the family holiday home of J W Knowles and his family for a number of years.
Includes:
Visitors book to the house featuring photographs of the building and notes from visitors who came to stay. Included amongst the signatures are the parents of English artist and sculptor Barbara Hepworth;
Letter re income tax on the property, 1910;
Newspaper cuttings book re Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby (including details of author Leo Walmsley who used to stay in the area and played cricket with J W Knowles); 1905-1964.

This collection primarily includes papers of John Ward Knowles and his son John Alder Knowles, which form a research collection predominantly on churches (including York Minster), glass manufacture and stained glass, as well as original design artwork (KNO/1-24). The collection also includes a small amount of business papers relating to the glass painting business they founded and managed - J W Knowles & Sons (KNO/23). In addition to the research collection are personal papers relating to both John Ward Knowles and John Alder Knowles (KNO/25 and 26), as well as items relating to their relative Christopher Milward (KNO/27), a former Lord Mayor of York. Some of the items can be attributed to the family as a whole but not individual family members (KNO/28).
