Labelled 'St. Martin cum Gregory Church York'. Shows Frances Bathurst's tomb in St Martin-cum-Gregory church, Micklegate. Decoration on tombstone and the beginning of the epitaph are visible, where Frances is described as 'a person of excellent accomplishments both of body and mind, and adorned the several stations of life she went through'. Frances's epitaph is listed amongst Francis Drake's 'Monumental Inscriptions in the Churches of York' in Eboracum Volume 2. Glass plate negative.

The volumes contain newspaper clippings and handwritten notes on Yorkshire churches, church architecture and York Minster, whilst the additional papers include typescripts of articles written by J A Knowles and information on specific windows in York Minster and elsewhere.

The volumes primarily include handwritten notes by J W Knowles, and newspaper cuttings on theatrical productions, theatres, actors and actresses. The series also includes theatrical programmes for a number of theatres, including York Theatre Royal and the Grand Opera House, and theatrical magazines.

These negatives and postcards were originally individually labelled by J W Knowles, and stored in poor quality envelopes. During the process of cataloguing, these items were repackaged into archival quality envelopes, and the details on the original envelopes transferred to the catalogue descriptions. This information now appears in the 'Title' field. Please see individual item descriptions for full details of this extensive series.

Includes original black and white and colour designs for stained glass windows, war memorials and church fittings carried out by J W Knowles & Son, as well as photographs of glass panels. Many of the designs have been mounted onto card and are captioned.

Includes correspondence and photographs received by J A Knowles relating to damage to stained glass during the Second World War, journals that he was involved in and articles for those journals. Also includes correspondence with the British Society of Master Glass-Painters.
The letters were originally housed in an expanding file, but were removed in original order by the archivist.

Includes correspondence and photographs received by both John Ward Knowles and his son J A Knowles, concerning the British Society of Master Glass-Painters; Bringmann and Schmidt, German glass painters; and individual stained glass windows. The letters appear to have been acquired due to the Knowles' involvement in the Journal of the British Society of Master Glass-Painters.
