Operational records of the River Foss Society including minutes, financial papers, membership details, accounts and publicity. Also includes information about events and activities held by the Society and the management of the environment along the River Foss.

Benton was born and raised in York and worked on the railways. He signed up to fight during the First World War, and returned home injured in 1918 following the loss of his lower left arm and a bone in his right arm. The papers in this collection relate primarily to his war service. Please note digital copies of all items in this collection also exist.

Volumes of handwritten notes about civic officials within York from the medieval period through to the 17th and 18th centuries. The information in the volumes is arranged alphabetically by surname. The papers of Teasdale solicitors were found co-located within the papers of Gray, Dodsworth & Co, however no direct link has yet been found to prove that Teasdale was a constituent business. This collection comprises legal papers for individuals and properties, most likely in connection with clients of the business, as well as receipted household accounts for Mr Teasdale, and accounts for two customers of the businss. In addition, the collection includes a number of boxes relating to the collection of bad debts on behalf of J Terry and Sons Ltd. Diaries, logs and papers of Sir William Strickland and his son Eustachius Strickland. Includes:
-William Strickland's diaries and log of his voyage to America
-Strickland Family Papers - papers of William and Eustachius Strickland on a wide variety of subjects - history, agriculture, botany, law, and religion. Compiled or written in the 18th and early 19th centuries, but the subject matter dealt with covers a historical period from 921BC-1830.

The collection of personal and business records of the Swales family, a family Butchers business based in Goodramgate. The earliest document is a Baptism Certificate, which shows the birth of a John Swales in 1853, although the Freemen records mention another John Swales (Butcher) who was apprenticed in 1812.

The main part of the collection features the life of John Thomas Swales, who was born in 1869, and appears to have taken over the family business in 1896. John Thomas became a Methodist Lay Preacher, an influential member of local trade organisations, and was nominated for a vacancy on the Board of Guardians in 1907. The documentation also shows his marriage to Ada Plummer in 1897, and some information on their two children, Hilda Mary (who later became an American citizen) and Thomas, (who carried on the family profession of a Butcher).
