From 1869 Masters of workhouses were required to record the religious affiliation of inmates in Creed Registers so that appropriate measures could be taken in the event of illness or death.

Details recorded in each register vary over time but usually include: name; date of admission; religious creed; name of informant; and in some cases date of discharge or death. Registers from 1906 record occupation and address of relation or friend. Registers from 1908 include 'place admitted from' or 'where slept last night' in each entry.

At the outbreak of war in 1939 the infirmary of the old workhouse was equipped to become an Emergency Medical Services Hospital. The infirmary received 77 non-civilian patients in 1939, 623 in 1940 and 434 in 1941. Creed Registers from 1939-1941 therefore record admissions details of military war casualties (see refs PLU/2/3/17-19)

From 1942 emergency medical patients were treated at the new hospital which had opened next door to the infirmary.

Comprises statements for the York Poor Law Union, York Out-Relief Union, and Escrick Out-Relief Union.

Comprises records relating to the registration and oversight of cowsheds, dairies and cowkeepers in York.

Includes patients' registers; records relating to lunatics; and relief for patients in sick wards. Records are primarily from the mid-twentieth century.

Arranged chronologically into groups of years, as per the original arrangement.

The yearbooks include photographs and additional ephemeral material relating to the work of the Society. Arranged by Presidential year, they appear to have been discontinued from 2008.

Christopher Milward was a member of the Knowles' extended family, and held the position of Lord Mayor of York twice (1895-1897) including Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Year. This collection includes an album of newspaper cuttings relating to his work as Lord Mayor, and an order of service for his funeral.

There is also a menu for a dinner for the Gallery First Nighters' club. The collection was probably compiled by Cuthbert Joseph Kleiser (1855-1929) who had a keen interest in the theatre.

At present this collection only comprises boxes of wooden printing blocks with copper plates (and in some cases steel plates), used in the production of J B Morrell's publications. The plates are primarily uncatalogued, and relate to a number of different works. The blocks also come in a variety of different sizes, depending on the size of the original illustration.

Papers relating to the management of productions produced by the Company.

Comprises papers regarding loans for buildign work; lists of tenders received; agreements with tradesmen; and statement of costs.

These negatives and postcards were originally individually labelled by J W Knowles, and stored in poor quality envelopes. During the process of cataloguing, these items were repackaged into archival quality envelopes, and the details on the original envelopes transferred to the catalogue descriptions.
