Records of vehicle licensing and registration, including motor cars and motorcycles, and heavy vehicles. Some registers combine cars and motorcycles, whilst others contain just one or the other, so more than one volume may need to be consulted to cover the same licence plate or year range. Registers occasionally include cancellation and transfer dates, plus occasional inserted correspondence.

Four of the 28 volumes are restricted under the Data Protection Act (Y/PPT/3/1/9, Y/PPT/3/1/21 to 23 covering the period 1948-1959) Researchers may consult these volumes after filling in a Data Protection Researcher Exemption form. This form may take up to 48 hours to be authorised so please contact us in advance if you wish to see these volumes.

Note only street improvements undertaken prior to the establishment of the Streets and Buildings Committee (i.e. up to c1890) have been catalogued. Later records relating to street improvements are currently uncatalogued.
