Books recording inspections of nuisance complaints affecting dwellings. Nuisances inspected include privies, air quality, keeping of animals, offensive trades, and drains. Also records inspections of premises for overcrowding, and for sanitary conditions at the home accommodation of patients with infectious diseases. A small number of volumes include plans and this is indicated in the relevant item descriptions.

Vehicle licensing records

Records of vehicle licensing and registration, including motor cars and motorcycles, and heavy vehicles. Some registers combine cars and motorcycles, whilst others contain just one or the other, so more than one volume may need to be consulted to cover the same licence plate or year range. Registers occasionally include cancellation and transfer dates, plus occasional inserted correspondence.

Four of the 28 volumes are restricted under the Data Protection Act (Y/PPT/3/1/9, Y/PPT/3/1/21 to 23 covering the period 1948-1959) Researchers may consult these volumes after filling in a Data Protection Researcher Exemption form. This form may take up to 48 hours to be authorised so please contact us in advance if you wish to see these volumes.

These letters of thanks were received from members of the armed forces from York on active service during the First World War, following the decision by the council to send each of them a present of a bar of chocolate for Christmas 1914. As a result the letters are more commonly referred to as the Chocolate Letters. The letters are individually numbered and arranged alphabetically by surname.

Log books for Rufforth Undenominational School. The log books include information about school attendance, upkeep of the buildings, the absences of particular pupils and the names of those admitted to or leaving the school. In some cases the schoolmaster states why the pupil is leaving and where they are moving on to. The schoolmaster from January 1881-October 1882 was J. Thomas Conyers Robson; he returned to the school in April 1883 after an absence of 5 months, during which time James Whitworth was master.

From 1838 city felons were sent to the Castle prison, rather than the city prison.
