The central recorded series of admitted freemen. The first volume has been previously known as C/Y [Continues post-Giles]. Records under 100 years old will be restricted under the Data Protection Act.

Various memoranda books that cover a wide range of topics include gild ordinances, rents, tolls, taxes, chantries, oaths, official correspondence, recognizances, inrolments, hospitals, leases, certificates, wills, charities, fishing rights. Memoranda and register books that relate to specific functions are listed elsewhere. The first two volumes were previously also known as A/Y and B/Y.

This series of conveyances includes a number issued by the Corporation of York and others issued by third parties, relating to land and premises in the City of York area. Also includes property files such as commercial conveyances, purchases/acquisitions, title enquiries, commercial/business leases, deeds and title documents for various lands owned by City of York Council.

The rolls were the formal audited version of the corporation accounts. Incomplete series.

Collections of memoranda on a wide variety of subjects such as elections, courts, orders, measures. Detailed information on the contents can be found in the Giles Catalogue (1909). When ordering please state the E number in addition to the reference number.

Account rolls for St Leonard's Hospital for years 1437-1438, 1457-1458 and 1540-1541. The 1457-1458 roll only survives as a fragment and the 1540-1541 roll is incomplete.

Inclosure and dispute papers.

Day to day accounts of gaoler's activities at York Castle prison including attendance at quarter sessions, births in the prison, suicide attempts, disciplinary issues and punishments, arrivals and departures of prisoners including executions. From 1838 city felons were sent to the Castle prison, rather than the city prison.

Day to day account of activities of the prison Chaplain, including a list of duties, visiting individual prisoners (including before execution), morning prayers, basic religious instruction.

This extensive collection includes volumes detailing the registration of canals using the lock, as well as other traffic passing through and the monies owed. Also includes wages books for staff operating the lock, correspondence files to and from the lock keeper, and extensives notes on river levels and soundings. .

Comprises records relating primarily to the accommodation and care of patients with mental health issues. Also includes a small number of records concerning York City Asylum.

The current electoral roll is found in series Y/COU/6/5 and Y/COU/6/6 and do need to be requested. Different access regulations appy to the edited and full versions, staff will be able to advise on which you should order.

Returns and statistics recorded as part of an enquiry into a Typhoid Fever outbreak in York 1886

Log books for Rufforth Undenominational School. The log books include information about school attendance, upkeep of the buildings, the absences of particular pupils and the names of those admitted to or leaving the school. In some cases the schoolmaster states why the pupil is leaving and where they are moving on to. The schoolmaster from January 1881-October 1882 was J. Thomas Conyers Robson; he returned to the school in April 1883 after an absence of 5 months, during which time James Whitworth was master.

Bound copy of act

Papers relating to the Local Government Board enquiry carried out by Dr Ballard into deaths from diarrhoea in 1880. The papers include notes, statistics, summary reports and reports of individual cases in York.

Reports of the Medical Officer of Health to the Urban Sanitary Committee and later the Health Committee. Reports on average were fortnightly but could be more or less regular. Incudes notifications to the Town Clerk of cases of infectious diseases.
